UBC Student Health Services

This is a great clinic but it only treats UBC students. What's important to know is that if you've missed class due to illness and you need a doctors note to excuse missed work or exams etc. this is the place to go. They're completely familiar with the situation and will make sure to give you a formal note for your professor which can be used as proof of illness.

Another thing to know about this clinic is that it is associated with UBC and therefore is a teaching clinic. The clinic will frequently have medical school students or nurse practitioners in training who will be your primary caregiver while being supervised by an experienced and fully qualified physician.

For a UBC student, this is the best place to see a doctor without much wait time like usual walk-in clinics. The people at the front desk and the doctors very polite, friendly and helpful. The doctors are willing to explain what exactly has happened and how it can treated, in somewhat more of an academic way compared to other walk-in clinics, and I liked it.

Make sure you have an SHS account set up, that way you can schedule an appointment online at https://myhealth.shs.ubc.ca/. You need to go to the UBC student health services front desk to sign up and to get a temp password which is only valid for the next 24 hours. Once you login for the first time, you are all set. It is better to have the account ready now than when you will need it.

Sometimes they are pretty busy and you might have to wait for two or so days.

There is a no-show policy: if you do not show up without cancelling at least 2 hours in advance, a $30 fine will be applied.
